Through short ABRSM theory video lessons, I help music teachers be 10x more efficient during lesson time with their music students.
Learn More About ABRSM Online CoursesFor the past 13 years as a piano and flute teacher, I’ve always struggled to balance teaching instrument skills and music theory to my music students.
They are taught at the speed of the slowest students in music theory group classes. They often don’t truly understand concepts taught as theory tutors are stressed to continue teaching without verifying what was taught.
That’s why I created structured 1-2 minutes theory lessons to help myself maximize lesson time with my students to achieve their best potential.
I believe these video lessons can do the same for many music tutors. I hope it accelerates the learning speed of your students to greater heights!

Who are you?
I’m JJ, and have been a piano and flute teacher for the past 13 years in Singapore. I’ve taught music in over a dozen primary and secondary schools. I created these online courses for myself to be more efficient during lesson time with my own students. My complete bio can be found at the bottom of this website.
Who is your theory music course for?
They are for anyone who is started their journey in learning music. It does not matter what instrument you’re learning. They are suitable for music tutors of ALL instruments to help their students learn faster and more efficiently. Learning music theory makes it 10x easier for instrument teachers to guide their music students to learn faster.
I'm a music teacher. Can I have a preview of what your course looks like before I recommend it to my students?
Please request for a free preview at thamjiangjun@gmail.com and we'll set-up a call to run-through any concerns you may have.
When can I use the course after I have purchased it?
A login ID and password will be sent to your registered email for immediate access on the online courses.
Is the course refundable?
Yup it is refundable within 30 days from purchase. If you complete this course and don't think it was worth your time and money, I will refund your full investment! No hassles. Just email me with your completed assignments at thamjiangjun@gmail.com within 30 days of purchase, showing that you at least completed the course, and ask for a refund. T&Cs Apply.
How long will it take for my child to finish the course?
On average, there are about ~50 to ~60 video lessons for each theory grade. 1 lesson takes about 1-2 minutes. Assuming that a child goes through just 4 video lessons per day (~20 minutes a day), it’ll take about 3-4 weeks to complete all lessons. If we add on an additional week to practice and revise for the final theory exam paper, your child should be able to take 5-6 weeks to be ready for the theory exam paper. T&Cs apply.
What support is there for these courses?
Please email thamjiangjun@gmail.com for any support or questions you have about these courses. A reply will be sent out within 1-2 working days. T&Cs apply.
Why is music theory important? Can’t I just let my child have instrument lessons?
Music theory is the language of music. Imagine if your child is able to speak good English but can’t write at all; that’s similar to music theory. It complements instrumental lessons and allows children to become even better musicians as they are able to better understand the music they are learning.
Can I share your courses with other people?
You are purchasing a Single User License for my online courses. This license provides access to all videos and downloadable resources from this course to be viewed and used by one person. A Single User License does not allow any part of this course material to be shared with another person.
Which course should I take if I’m a complete beginner?
I recommend taking the Grade 1 ABRSM Theory Online Course. It sets the fundamentals for all music knowledge and teaches all basics required.
What instrument are your music courses suitable for?
They are suitable for any musical instrument that uses Western music notation. Even if you play non-western instruments like the erhu, dizi, pipa, or drums, they are suitable as most modern instruments follow the Western music notation system.
Is there an in-person component to the online courses?
In-person coaching is not included for every purchase of the online course. However, do email me at thamjiangjun@gmail.com if you’re interested in 1-1 online music theory tuition. The online course is meant to fully substitute in-person tutors to allow students to learn at their own pace. If you’re a parent, I recommend taking the course alongside your child to learn music theory together. The best students I’ve had always had parents who supported their children in their music journey.
What are the requirements to take this course?
Aside from a stable internet connection and understanding of the English language, no other prerequisites are needed. Lessons are broken down into 1-2 minute lessons to accommodate for the short-attention-span of children. Guided exercises are immediately presented to them after every single lesson.
What happens if I don’t understand what was taught in the lessons?
Send me an email at thamjiangjun@gmail.com and reply as soon as I can to ensure sure you understand what was taught.
How long can I access this content?
All courses are available for 1 year (365 days) upon purchase. 1 ABRSM Theory Grade should not take more than a month to prepare based on materials provided in the online course which will provide students ample time to prepare for the ABRSM Theory exam. If you’re tight on time, send me an email at thamjiangjun@gmail.com to get a free time extension of the courses. T&C applies.
Does this course include the costs of the ABRSM Theory exam?
Purchasing online courses here does not include the costs of the ABRSM Theory Exam.
Why are your courses more expensive than other music courses on learning platforms?
The problem with 99% of theory online courses is that they are 1) extremely long, 2) aren’t suitable for young children, 3) lack of exercises to validate concepts taught. Based on these challenges, I’ve intentionally created short 1-2 minute lessons to suit the attention span of children. To reinforce concepts taught, each lesson has a follow-up guided quiz to ensure students practice what they learn. Time and resources have been invested into the creation of these videos and quizzes; they have been factored into the price of my courses.
What are my payment options?
All payments are securely processed through PayPal, and you’ll get an email receipt immediately after purchase. If you need a more detailed invoice for your records, let us know and we'll be happy to help you.
Why is the currency listed not exactly the price of course stated?
Paypal currently only accepts USD payments. The prices above are all converted into SGD from USD. Prices may fluctuate. Rest assured that the USD prices will be adjusted to be as accurate, or if not cheaper than the stated SGD price. Please email thamjiangjun@gmail.com if USD stated price exceeds the current SGD price.
I can’t afford your course but really wish to take it. What can I do?
Send me an email at thamjiangjun@gmail.com with any evidence. I want to support the growth of music knowledge as much as possible and provide help if needed.
JJ began his music journey when he was 7 years old after starting playing the piano under Dale Huang. He picked up the Dizi when he was at 11 years of age under dedicated guidance from Dr. Tan Qing Lun, who was a Dizi soloist in Ding Yi Music Company.
At an age of 14, he managed to attain his Diploma in performance (Merit) from the Beijing Central Conservatory of Music and a high distinction in the ABRSM Grade 8 Piano examinations. His outstanding potential had secured him as one of Singapore’s representative in the 2015 Shanghai Conservatory of Music Programme 2015 under the counsel of Professor Zhan Yong Ming.
In his pursuit of musical excellence, he was awarded 2nd in the Dizi Youth Category organised by the National Arts Council (NAC) in the biennial National Chinese Music Competition (2010).
JJ is the founding member and key soloist at Ding Yi Youth Ensemble, and led the ensemble to attain 1st Prize in the 2014 National Arts Council Chinese Instrumental Competition just within a short year of formation. The Ding Yi Youth Ensemble staged its inaugural concert in August 2015 at Raffles Jubilee Hall and he had served as the organising executive committee.
He was also involved as a soloist and the organising committee for the Singapore Chinese Music Federation’s Singapore Dizi Festival held in Jul 2015. The event was the first of its kind in Singapore and involved inviting several renowned Dizi Maestros and students from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music to stage a 3-day performance in collaboration with Singaporean Dizi musicians.
In the never-ending quest of musical improvement, JJ self-taught himself the western flute and eventually joined the AdioImage Wind Ensemble led by Clarence Tan. Subsequently, he joined the National University of Singapore (NUS) Symphony Orchestra under Lim Soon Lee and was privileged to be under the tutelage of the highly sought-after renowned flutist, Wang Tong.
In 2016, JJ founded the Asian Cultural Symphony Orchestra, which is a non-profit arts organisation aimed to help promote the works of Asian composers. It has been featured by The Straits Times and LianHeZaobao for the promotion of arts. The former had quoted the founding of the orchestra as "a symphony orchestra with an Asian Sensibility".
JJ teaches both piano and flute, and had taught in schools such as Bedok South Secondary, Siglap Secondary School, Maris Stella High School, Greenridge Primary School, Evergreen Primary School, Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road), Elias park Primary School and Catholic High School
